"Where young musicians take their first bow."
The Northwoods Youth Orchestra, founded in 2026, provides elementary students in the Bemidji area with a dynamic and collaborative introduction to string instruments. Designed for students in grades 2–5, the program nurtures foundational musical skills while cultivating teamwork, confidence, and creativity.
Rooted in the mission of the Bemidji Performing Arts Academy — to provide high-quality transformative education and experiences through music — these rehearsals provide a safe and inspiring environment where students can begin their musical journey on violin and cello.
No prior experience required. Open to all students in grades 2–5, enrollment is managed through BPAA.
Build early technical skills in tone production, bowing, posture, and pitch awareness from the very first rehearsal.
Develop ensemble and listening skills through cooperative music-making alongside peers of similar age and level.
Encourage students to perform with poise and pride in a supportive, encouraging environment.
Introduce notation, rhythm reading, and ear training appropriate to each level using proven pedagogical materials.
Reinforce teamwork, responsibility, and empathy through shared musical goals and high behavioral expectations.
The Northwoods Youth Orchestra reflects BPAA's core values in every rehearsal:
Every rehearsal models honesty, encouragement, and respect among students and teachers.
Musical and behavioral expectations are high, with an emphasis on personal effort and accountability.
Lessons integrate creative exercises, movement, and modern methods to make learning joyful and effective.
Students perform in two Capstone Performances per year — one each semester — highlighting student progress, teamwork, and musical growth for families and the Bemidji community.
